Description

One of the few pictures that exist of James Bradwell.
James Bradwell grew up in the Cook County area and would spend much of his life there. After marrying Myra Colby in 1852, he was admitted into the Illinois Bar in 1854 and served as a lawyer for many years. He was widely respected, as he was Abraham Lincoln’s personal attorney, and became a judge in 1861, leading his county through the legal unknown of the Civil War and Reconstruction.
James Bradwell was a fierce supporter of his wife, aiding in her legal studies, drafting legislation, and even joining the National Woman Suffrage Association as a temporary chairman in 1869. Indeed, his own activism could revival his wife’s career. The activism of the Bradwell couple was built off of a mutual relationship of support between James and Myra.
