An Account of the Proceedings on the Trail of Susan B. Anthony, on the charge of Illegal Voting, At the Presidential Election in Nov., 1872...
Subject
Trial transcript of Susan B. Anthony's case for illegally voting in an election
Description
This trial transcript perhaps captures why Susan B. Anthony harbored grudges against Myra Bradwell. In her trial for casting a vote in the 1872 presidential election, the legal review uses Myra Bradwell's case to further reinforce how the 14th amendment does not grant women's suffrage. Since the "rights referred to in the 14th amendment are those belonging to a person as a citizen of the United States," and the "regulation of the suffrage is thereby conceded to the states as a state's right" as ruled in Bradwell v. Illinois, Anthony's action of voting cannot be protected under the amendment.
Transcript rhetoric like this is vital to understanding the difference in strategies among the Women’s Rights Movement. Myra Bradwell thought that petitioning the courts for rights other than suffrage could make progress, while Anthony saw the courts as stuck in the past.
