Subject

Myra Bradwell advocating for women to serve in school administrative positions

Description

This newspaper articles highlights certain developments for women's rights, including their ability to serve as county superintendents for school boards. The paper states that 13 Illinois women serve in their county school board and Myra Bradwell pushed for women to fill the State Superintendent school board.

Many women's rights activists pushed for women to occupy lower positions of office like school board positions for two main reasons: one, women were thought to have an iniate ability to care for children and provide the best upbringing. Second, these positions could highlight their ability to serve in public positions. Myra Bradwell's call for more women in school board positions shows her shared beliefs with other women's rights activists.

Text

The law permitting women to be elected county superintendents of schools in Illinois, was passed four years ago, and under it no less than 13 females have held office. The "record" of the 13 proves to be so entirely satisfactory that Mrs. Myra Bradwell, editor of the Chicago Legal News, wants the electors to go a step further and fill the office of State Superintendents of schools with a woman.
