Title

Letter from Robert Todd Lincoln to Myra Bradwell

Subject

Letter from Robert Lincoln addressing his mother's health

Description

In this letter to Bradwell, Robert Todd Lincoln shares his disappointment that aunt Elizabeth Edwards is too unwell to visit his mother at Bellevue Place. He asks Myra Bradwell to visit less often, bring no one to visit Mary Lincoln that he does not know, and not to deliver letters on her behalf.
The only remaining child of Mary and Abarham Lincoln had his mother committed to a mental asylum after increasingly concerning behavior in light of her husband's death. This letter shows the disagreement between Robert and Myra on the mental health of Mary Todd Lincoln.
Bradwell and her husband would play a large role in orchestrating the widow’s release. Bradwell’s commitment to Mary Todd Lincoln demonstrates how she fought for the heath and well being of all women who often fell victim to inherent sexism in the legal system.
